The imprisonment of a Swiss writer and political commentator, Alain Bonnet, also known as Alain Soral, for defamation, discrimination, and incitement to hatred, has been announced by the Lausanne court. The sentence includes 60 days in prison and hefty fines. He will also have to pay legal fees and fines in thousands of Swiss francs. Two years ago, Soral made derogatory remarks about journalist Catherine Macherel on Facebook, referring to her as a ‘fat lesbian’ and criticizing her work as a ‘queer activist’. Following the court’s decision, LGBTQ+ rights advocates have expressed support for the ruling. In response, Murial Waeger, co-director of the lesbian activist group LOS, labeled the court’s ruling as a crucial moment for justice and LGBTQI rights in Switzerland. Nevertheless, Pascal Junod, Soral’s lawyer, criticized the verdict as an attack on freedom of expression, indicating that Soral will appeal the decision.
