Wong Jack Man vs. Bruce Lee: Here’s how it all played out

The Wong Jack Man vs. Bruce Lee fight is one of the most famous and controversial fights in the history of Chinese martial arts. However, many aspects of the fight remain a mystery to this day. This is not only due to the fact that it took place privately and had no referee, but also due to the conflicting testimonies of the witnesses of the match, as well as the two fighters themselves. Here we will safely take you to the fight as we find out who the contenders were and the secret behind the much-discussed fight.

Who Was Bruce Lee?

Bruce Lee was a Hong Kong-born American artist, martial arts instructor, actor, and director active on November 27, 1940. His films, produced in Hong Kong and Hollywood, not only popularized Chinese martial arts in the West, but also changed the perception of Asians in Hollywood films. Sadly, he died in July 1973 at the age of 32.

Who is Wong Jack Man?

Born in 1941, a year after Bruce Lee, Wong Jackman is a well known and highly respected martial artist and instructor. He taught various styles of Chinese martial arts such as Tai Chi Chuan, Northern Shaolin and Xingyiquanat at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. He trained some of America’s finest martial artists. The grandmaster retired in 2005.

What was The Fight about?

Just as there are conflicting accounts of what actually happened during the fight, there are also conflicting reasons as to what actually triggered the fight. The Bruce Lee camp believes he was “targeted” by the San Francisco martial arts hierarchy for teaching Caucasians the secrets of Chinese martial arts. According to them, Lee was given an ultimatum: “If he lost the match, he’d either stop teaching Caucasians or he’d shut down his studio entirely.”

This argument was rejected by the Wong camp, who argued that racing had nothing to do with the Wong Jack Man fight against Bruce Lee. They point to the fact that two of the most revered instructors of the time, TY Wong and Lau Bun (whom Lee had essentially described as toothless old tigers), had non-Caucasian students. They instead argue that the fight happened because of Lee’s arrogance. Lee had boasted during a demonstration at a Chinatown theater that he could beat any martial artist in San Francisco and had given an open challenge to anyone who doubted him to step forward and fight him. Lee didn’t stop there, but instead sent an acquaintance to deliver a message to Wong, inviting him to come and fight him.

The Wong Jack Man vs. Bruce Lee Fight: Here’s how it all went down

The fight took place in the winter of 1964 at Bruce Lee’s kung fu school in Oakland, California. Due to the fact that there was no referee and the fight was not recorded, one has no choice but to rely on the reports of those present. Some of the attendees included Bruce Lee’s wife Linda, his studio associate James Lee, and William Chen, a local tai chi instructor. According to reports, between 7 and 15 people watched the fight.

According to Linda Lee, the fight didn’t last until 3 minutes, and her husband won comprehensively. Lee was very aggressive from the start and slapped Wong so many times that Wong’s colleagues immediately wanted to call off the match, but Lee’s colleague, James Lee, refused. At one point, Wong tried to run, but Lee pulled him to the ground and lunged at him like a leopard, continuing to hit him until Wong surrendered with his own mouth.

In contrast, Wong’s account states that the fight lasted between 20 and 25 minutes. Bruce was very aggressive from the start, forcing Wong into a defensive position. According to Wong, he knew that Lee would rather die than accept defeat, and to forestall such a fatal event, he continued to block Lee’s shots until Lee ran out of breath and gave up. According to Wong, he had three chances to land devastating punches at Lee but held off due to the legal ramifications.

The third account of the Wong Jack Man vs. BruceLee fights when Lee comes out aggressively while Wong is more reserved, according to William Chen. The fight lasted up to 20 minutes and, in his opinion, was a draw. Neither fighter won the match directly.

Which account is true?

Those who argue that the Wong report is credible have three reasons:

  • First, the fact that Bruce Lee developed a new fighting style known as Jeet Kune Do after the fight. If he had defeated Wong emphatically, as he claimed, he would not have had to abandon the fighting style that had served him faithfully since his youth.
  • They also point to the fact that Wong left the next day to work at the busy Jackson Cafe, where he made his living as a waiter. If, as Bruce Lee claims, he had been thoroughly beaten, he should have been nursing his injuries in bed.
  • Third, after Bruce Lee went public, because of the details of the fight, Wong had to give an interview to a Chinese daily newspaper telling what was transpiring. He then challenged Lee to a public fight if he disagreed with Lee’s own statement. Amazingly, Lee, who had never backed away from a challenge in the past, failed to catch the gauntlet.

On the other hand, the Bruce Lee camp argues that he only changed his fighting style because he wanted a more effective fighting style than his normal Wing Chun.

Wong Jack Man might have been the only one to do that, defeating Bruce Lee, but we’ll never know since the other protagonist in this story is no longer with us. If Lee were still alive, he probably would have tempered the age and revealed the truth about what really happened in the fight between Wong Jack Man and Bruce Lee.
