On Tuesday, a Kenyan woman appeared in the Makadara Law Courts, facing allegations that she drugged her former colleague’s drink and subsequently stole from him.
The accused, Millicent Wanjiru, is charged with theft contrary to section 268 as read with section 275 of the penal code, as well as handling stolen goods contrary to section 322 (1) of the same code.
It is alleged that Ms. Wanjiru stole electronics, household items, an ATM card, and Sh5000 in cash, totaling Sh76,000 from Jackson Imbwaka’s house in Githurai 44, Nairobi, on January 18, 2023.
In the second count, she is charged with dishonestly retaining items believed to be stolen, including a laptop with a charger, two mobile phones, and a watch, in the course of stealing them.
According to Mr. Imbwaka, he had invited Wanjiru to his house for drinks and a meal after she requested a meeting. The two had previously worked together at a community-based organization until 2020.
When Imbwaka left to purchase more items and returned to find himself unexpectedly asleep in the afternoon, he discovered the following day that some of his belongings and cash were missing. Additionally, Sh9,500 had been withdrawn from his M-Pesa account.
Upon reporting the incident, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) tracked Wanjiru to her residence in Kahawa West, leading to her arrest and the recovery of some stolen items.
Denying the charges before Principal Magistrate Hellen Okwani of Makadara Law Courts, Wanjiru was released on a bond of Sh200,000 without the option of cash bail.
The case is scheduled for mention on April 11, 2023, with the hearing set to commence on August 9, 2023.
