The actor was born on July 16, 1967 as John William Ferrell in Irvine, California, United States of America. He was born as the son of Betty Kay and Roy Lee Ferrel Jr. of his parents. His mother was a teacher, while his father played saxophone and keyboards for the Righteous Brothers. Also, his parents moved to California in 1964 after spending most of his life in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
However, his parents divorced when he was eight years old. Furthermore, he has a mixed ethnicity of English, German, and Irish. He had suffered from pyloric stenosis when he was still an infant and underwent a pyloromyotomy to correct the condition. He grew up with his younger brother named Patrick.
Regarding his education, he attended Culverdale Elementary School and later attended Rancho San Joaquin High School. After that, he also joined University High School in Irvine, where he was a kicker for the school’s varsity football team.
