Hathaway was born Anne Jacqueline Hathaway, the second of three children of Kate (née McCauley) and Gerald Hathaway on November 12, 1982 in Brooklyn, New York. Her father is a labor attorney while her mother is a former actress. She is of Irish, French, English and German descent and grew up in a Roman Catholic household.
Anne Hathaway grew up in Millburn, New Jersey after her family moved there when she was six. She began her elementary education in New York at Brooklyn Heights Montessori School before later transferring to Wyoming Elementary School in Millburn.
