Daniel Mark Porush was born on February 1957 in Lawrence, Nassau County, New York. In the 1990s, Donnie Azoff, an American businessman and ex-stockbroker engaged in a "pump and dump" stock fraud scheme. He was sentenced to 39 months in jail in 1999 after being found guilty of securities fraud and money laundering at the Stratton Oakmont brokerage. Jonah Hill's portrayal of Donnie Azoff in the 2013 movie The Wolf of Wall Street was loosely based on Porush, despite the fact that Porush thought the portrayal was wrong. Following his release from prison, Porush started working for the Florida-based Med-Care medical supply company, which was under federal investigation.

What Happened To Donnie Azoff?
Like any fictionalized accounts of true events, some liberties were taken with Jordan Belfort's life and misdeeds, such as substituting some of Belfort's real-life friends for Jonah Hill's Donnie Azoff character. Due to his close relationships with many of the stockholders he was embezzling from and his role as the company's originator, Donnie receives the harshest prison sentence of all the Stratton Oakmont members, and he never sees Jordan again.

The character of Donnie Azoff is based on Danny Porush, a real-life person who acted as Belfort's right-hand man at Stratton and was reportedly an uncontrollable Quaalude user. Through Belfort's wife, Porush met Belfort. He wasn't, as the movie suggests, a salesman for children's furniture who left his job to work for Belfort after seeing one of Belfort's pay stubs. Although the movie shows Belfort giving Donnie CPR after he choked on food while high on Quaaludes, it was actually another friend of Belfort's whose life was saved when Belfort gave him CPR.
