Waka Flocka Flame is the stage name of American rapper Juaquin James Malphurs. The nickname “Waka” was inspired by the phrase “Waka Waka”, the popular catchphrase used by the Muppets character Fozzie Bear. The last part of the stage name “Flocka Flame” was given to her by rapper Gucci Mane, who was her mentor and main collaborator.
Waka Flame came into the limelight in 2009 after the release of his debut single O Do it. The hit single was nominated in the “Best Club Banger category at the 2010 BET Hip Hop Awards. The success of the single effectively launched him as a mainstream artist followed by more hit singles such as Hard in the Paint ( 2010), No Hands (2010) and Thunderous Applause (2012) with Drake. He also scored other major collaborations with industry bigwigs such as Diddy, Rick Ross, Ludacris, and Lil’ Wayne.

The rapper was born on May 31, 1986, in South Jamaica, New York. Later his family moved to Riverdale, Georgia where he was raised. Growing up, Waka Flocka had early exposure to showbiz. His mother, Debra Antney, owned the management company Mizay Entertainment, which Gucci Mane subscribed to.
Following the success of his first single Let’s do it (2009), Waka Flocka released his first studio album, Flockaveli (2010), named after the late Italian philosopher Machiavelli. The talented rapper was nominated for the ‘Rookie of the Year’ award at the 2010 BET Hip Hop Awards. He was also ranked 8th on MTV’s list of Hottest MCs of 2010.
On June 8, 2012, he released his second album Triple F Life: Friends, Fans and Family. It featured world-renowned Canadian rapper Drake on the album’s lead single titled ‘Round of Applause’.
Waka Flocka is an early signatory to Gucci’s Mane record label, 1017 Brick Squad, alongside rapper OJ Da Juiceman. Waka Flocka met Gucci Mane when he was 19 and the latter is widely regarded as his mentor. However, the relationship between the two rappers has been frosty in the past as there have been social media exchanges between the two as well as the release of diss tracks.
Waka Flocka’s career has also been littered with several controversies as well as a number of run-ins with the law. In 2010, he was shot twice during an attempted robbery in Atlanta. He has also been arrested on different occasions for offenses such as possession of marijuana or firearms.

Waka Flocka is married to American television personalityand musician Tammy Rivera. In addition to her showbiz career, Rivera is also a fashion designer and entrepreneur. The couple tied the knot on May 24, 2014.
The couple appeared together on the 3rd season of VHI Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta (2014). They are both parents to a daughter named Charlie (born 2005), Rivera’s child from a previous relationship.

Waka Flocka’s mother, Debra Antney, has been very instrumental in the rapper’s musical career. She is the founder and CEO of Atlanta-based management company Mizay Entertainment. In this capacity, she has led several major music groups such as Nicki Minaj, French Montana, OJ Da Juiceman, Gucci Mane as well as her own son Waka Flocka Flame.
Debra Antney worked specifically on Nicki’s 3rd mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty (2009) which helped catapult the latter into stardom. However, her working relationship with Gucci Mane didn’t turn out so rosy. Gucci Mane fired Antney as manager in 2010 before launching his own label. Debra Antney was also co-writer of the VH1 reality show Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.
Waka Flocka has a total of 7 siblings; 4 biological brothers and 3 adoptive sisters. In 2013, the rapper’s family suffered the tragic loss of their son and brother Coades Scott, whose stage name was KayO Redd. Sadly, the 27-year-old committed suicide on December 29, 2013, at his home in Georgia. Just like Waka Flocka, KayO Redd was also a rapper. The incident had such a profound effect on Waka Flocka that he made several major lifestyle changes to help him deal with the tragedy.
