The U.S. military is currently monitoring an unidentified balloon that crossed over American territory. The balloon’s origin and purpose are unknown, according to three U.S. officials. It traveled over parts of Hawaii but avoided sensitive areas. The military has been tracking it for about a week and has determined that it does not pose a threat to aerial traffic or national security as it is not emitting any signals. The nature of the object is unclear, and the U.S. reserves the right to intercept it if it approaches land.
The balloon, which appears to lack maneuverability, is gradually heading toward Mexico. Officials do not believe it is of Chinese origin but are working to identify its owner. When asked about the object, the National Security Council referred inquiries to the Defense Department, which has not yet commented. In early February, a Chinese spy balloon flew over parts of the U.S. before being shot down near the Carolina coast. Despite efforts by the Biden administration to prevent it, the device managed to gather intelligence from multiple sensitive American military locations.
