Alec Baldwin, a famous US actor, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter by a grand jury in New Mexico in connection with the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film “Rust”. The incident occurred in October 2021 during the filming of a scene at a ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico, where a gun went off while Hutchins was preparing to film with Baldwin.
Initially charged in January 2023, Baldwin’s charges were later dropped due to concerns raised by his defense team regarding the functionality of his Colt.45 at the time of the incident. However, a forensic report commissioned by the prosecution concluded that he must have pulled the trigger, leading to the decision to reopen the criminal case.
Baldwin, who served as both the star and producer of “Rust,” has consistently denied any responsibility for the tragic incident and maintained that he was informed the gun did not have live rounds. Despite this, he could potentially face up to 18 months in prison if convicted of involuntary manslaughter in New Mexico.
Legal action was pursued by Matthew Hutchins, the widower of Halyna Hutchins, following the tragic incident, and a settlement was reached in October 2022. The settlement ensured financial support for the couple’s son, who was 9 years old at the time of his mother’s death, through insurance funds and a share of the film’s profits. The film has been completed and is currently awaiting distribution. Baldwin’s attorneys have stated that they are looking forward to their day in court, as reported by the New York Times.
