On Wednesday, July 27, 2022, the Australian site operator announced that miners in Angola have discovered a rare pure pink diamond, possibly the largest found in 300 years.
The 170-carat pink diamond, named The Lulo Rose, was found at the Lulo mine in the diamond-rich northeast of the country, and is one of the largest pink diamonds ever discovered, according to a statement to investors by the Lucapa Diamond Company.
The Angolan government, which is a partner in the mine, welcomed the “historic” find of the Type IIa diamond, one of the rarest and purest forms of natural stones.
Angola’s Mineral Resources Minister Diamantino Azevedo expressed, “This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage.”
The diamond is expected to be sold at an international tender, likely fetching a dazzling price.
While The Lulo Rose would need to undergo cutting and polishing to realize its true value, similar pink diamonds have fetched record-breaking prices despite the fact that the process can cause a stone to lose 50 percent of its weight.
The Pink Star, weighing 59.6 carats, was sold for 71.2 million US dollars at a Hong Kong auction in 2017, making it the most expensive diamond ever sold.
