Gerardo Mejia Jr.: A Brief Overview

Gerardo Mejia, born on 16 April 1965 in Guayaquil, Ecuador, has built a multifaceted career as a singer, rapper, actor, recording industry executive, and pastor. His signature style, often featuring a bandana, skintight jeans, and a shirtless look, has become iconic. Combined, these endeavors have contributed significantly to his current net worth.

As of early-2017, sources estimate Gerardo Mejia’s net worth to be $6 million, primarily from his diverse ventures. He is known for self-references such as the “Latin Tony Zuzio”, “Latin Elvis”, and the “Latin Frank Sinatra”. With his ongoing work, it’s likely that his wealth will continue to grow.

Mejia’s family relocated to Glendale, California when he was around 12 years old. He commenced his acting career with a notable appearance in the 1987 film, “Can’t Buy Me Love”, alongside Patrick Dempsey and Amanda Peterson. This was followed by a role in the film “Colors” in 1988, where he portrayed the character Bird. The film highlighted his dance skills, although he did not sing in it.

The turning point in his career arrived in 1991 with the release of the hit single “Rico Suave”, reaching the 7th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the 2nd spot on the Hot Rap Singles chart. This song was part of his debut album “Mo’ Ritmo”, which peaked at number 36 on the Billboard 200 chart. Despite subsequent releases such as “We Want the Funk,” Gerardo’s stardom seemed confined to “Rico Suave,” marking him as a one-hit wonder according to VH1, MTV, and himself. Nevertheless, he continued to release albums, including “Dos” in 1992, “Asi Es” in 1994, and “Derrumbe” in 1995. In 2001, he launched the album “Gerardo: Fame, Sex y Dinero” under Thump Records, and his final album “180 degrees” was released in 2004.

Gerardo went on to become an A&R executive at Interscope Records. Notably, he played an instrumental role in discovering Enrique Iglesias in the late 1990s and persuading him to sign with Interscope Records. He also played a part in signing Bubba Sparxxx. Additional career highlights include his appearance on the reality show “Suave Says” with his family.

In 2013, Gerardo discussed his new focus as a Christian youth pastor in an interview with Katie Couric on her show “Katie”. He is an ordained pastor at the Kansas City Praise Chapel.

In his personal life, Gerardo Mejia has been married to Kathy Eicher since 1985. They have two daughters and a son, with Nadia Mejia finishing in the Top 5 of the Miss USA 2016 Pageant.
