On April 24 of the same year, Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe stated that while his office believed a crime had occurred, the evidence was insufficient to identify the perpetrator. The situation took a turn when an audio clip of Hill and his fiancée, Crystal Espinal, discussing their son’s injuries was leaked on April 25. In the audio, Espinal mentions their son’s fear of Hill, to which Hill responds, “You should be afraid of me, too.”
As a result, the criminal investigation against Hill was reopened. Prosecutors initially declared the case inactive on June 7. However, subsequent medical examinations revealed that the child’s arm was accidentally broken, likely as a result of a fall. On July 9, the complete unedited audio of Hill accusing Espinal of lying about a previous domestic violence case in 2014 and breaking their son’s arm was released.
The NFL’s statement on July 19 that year indicated that Hill would not face a ban due to insufficient evidence of violating the personal conduct standard. The statement also noted that any new evidence would lead to a re-examination of the case.
