Transgender inmate convicted of assaulting female prisoner, sentenced to 7 years

An inmate at New York City’s Rikers Island jail, who identifies as transgender, has been given a seven-year prison sentence for assaulting a female inmate in a restroom.

33-year-old Ramel Blount, who is known as Diamond Blount, entered a guilty plea for attempted rape on April 7 as part of a plea agreement.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark revealed that on February 8, 2021, the 33-year-old assailant approached a female inmate who had just finished showering at the Rose M. Singer facility in the jail. Blount allegedly pushed the victim from behind, grabbed her neck, and carried out the assault.

Following the victim’s report, a rape kit was used, and DNA analysis linked Blount to the crime through the New York State Registry. On April 7, 2022, Blount pleaded guilty to Attempted Rape in the first degree.

Blount has now been handed a seven-year prison term and eight years of post-release supervision, in addition to being mandated to register as a sex offender.

Clark stated, “Sexual violence against anyone is unacceptable. The defendant has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the terrible attack.”
