Moldova football player Violeta Mitul dies aged 26 in hiking accident

Moldovan football star, Violeta Mitul, aged 26, passed away in a heartbreaking accident.

UEFA confirmed Mitul’s tragic demise earlier this week following an incident during a mountain hike with her Einherji club teammates.

The talented left-back met her untimely end due to a fall from a cliff in the harbor area near Vopnafjordur.

“The 26-year-old defender was involved in a tragic accident while on a mountain hike with club-mates,” UEFA stated.

The Moldova Football Association released a statement confirming the news, expressing their deepest condolences and sorrow for the loss of one of their national team’s finest players in a tragic hiking accident.

Einherji’s statement described Mitul as a ‘kind, energetic, and exemplary footballer’.

“It is with deep sadness in our hearts that we announce the sudden death of our player, teammate, and friend Violeta Mitul, who passed away in an accident on the night of September 4, at the age of only 26. The Vopnafjörður community is mourning.

“Violeta, born on April 3, 1997, in Moldova, joined Einherji in the spring and played a pivotal role in the women’s team during the summer championship. She was a trusted team player and an exemplary soccer player.

“Her sudden demise has left a significant void, and our thoughts are with her grieving teammates and coaches during this time of sorrow.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Violeta’s family, Alexandra, Maria, Veaceslav, and Julia. At such a tragic time, there are no words or actions that can heal the pain of the loss, but we will endeavor to ease the suffering of the bereaved family and friends.”

Mitul was a prominent player for Moldova, earning 40 caps for her country and playing for clubs across Europe.

She joined the Icelandic club Einherji in early 2023, previously playing for teams in Spain, Italy, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. In her earlier career, she also achieved success by winning the Moldovan and Romanian Cups while playing for Alga Tiraspol and Vasas Femina, respectively.
