Mardini has continued to swim and even competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. In the same race, she had a much quicker time of 1:06.78, but she was unable to make it to the last 16 swimmers. Even while Yusra might not have returned home with a medal from each Olympics she has attended, the fact that she has been able to compete at all is a remarkable feat in and of itself.

Sara had to give up swimming after moving to Germany because of a shoulder injury. Sara was jailed in 2018 while carrying out humanitarian work on the Greek island of Lesbos, which was an unexpected turn of events. She was jailed for more than three months, according to The Guardian, after being charged with spying, drug trafficking, and involvement with a criminal organisation. The claims have been labelled "trumped up" and "farcical" by Amnesty International.
Sara's trial is yet to start despite multiple delays, but according to rumours, she could be sentenced to a maximum of 25 years in prison. Both sisters contributed behind-the-scenes labour to The Swimmers' production, and Yusra even subbed for herself in a few of the swimming scenes. The sisters' parents and younger sister, Shaed, travelled to Germany after they themselves left Syria.
