The Golden Ox wedding venue in Brisbane is up for sale

A beloved Brisbane wedding venue is set to be sold after falling into receivership.

Upcoming weddings were thrown into chaos after The Golden Ox Restaurant and Reception Centre at 330 Oxley Ave in Margate, which operated as a popular hospitality venue for almost 46 years, closed suddenly in July.

It was owned for more than forty years by Nick Tzimas and his family, who sold the business in 2022.

New owners, NPC Golden Ox Pty Ltd, announced via Facebook in July that the business had to “shut our doors for now” following the death of one of its owners.

News.com.au understands the closure followed the death of the owner’s spouse.

Further Facebook statements said that the business would be in touch with everyone with weddings booked.

“We would like to advise that all who have booked and paid deposits for functions will be contacted as soon as possible,” the owners said.

But the iconic site is now listed for sale by Phillip O’Dwyer and Nick Wedge from Colliers, under instructions from Shabnam Amirbeaggi of Crouch Amirbeaggi, which has been appointed as receiver.

Ms Amirbeaggi told news.com.au she was appointed as receiver on August 28, following the appointment of a liquidator on August 17.

Ms Amirbeaggi said the site offered a “a wonderful opportunity for someone to re-establish the business and continue to operate what has been a landmark business in the local area, and greater Brisbane region.”

“I am looking forward to a successful sale on the day of the auction and reopening the doors to the community,” he said.

According to its real estate listing, the 1831 square metre site a block from the beach features a building with restaurant, bar and dividable function facilities connected to an outdoor garden area suitable for weddings, receptions and other functions.

The auction is scheduled for October 26.

Several Facebook users expressed concerns about whether they’d get their deposits back for upcoming weddings with their plans thrown into disarray.

“I can’t believe that instead of doing the right thing as a venue and informing the people that have functions booked and have put thousands of dollars down, they get to find out on Facebook,” one bride-to-be wrote.

“Wedding booked there for December. And just find out on Facebook! Absolutely disgusting!! Doubt we will see our money!” wrote another unhappy customer.

However, one bride confirmed to news.com.au that she had subsequently received her deposit back in full.

News.com.au has contacted the liquidator for comment.
