The reporter was born on December 2, 1954 in Texas City, Texas, United States. He was born Stone Stockton Phillips to parents Victor and Grace Phillips. His father was a chemical engineer for Monsanto and his mother a school teacher. He has two brothers; brother, Victor III and sister Minta. The brothers grew up in the Claymont section of Ballwin, Missouri. Also, he has Scottish ancestry.
Regarding his education, he was an honor student at Parkway West High School in Ballwin, Missouri. During his high school, he also played as the starting quarterback for the school’s football team. He later joined Yale University and continued to excel in academics and athletics. In his college days, he played for the Yale Bulldogs Squad, which had won the Ivy League football championship. At the time, he was a member of Yale’s Scroll and Key secret society. Additionally, he has received the university’s prestigious F. Gordon Award for his outstanding academic and athletic leadership. In 1977, he graduated with honors earning a Bachelor of Philosophy.

After graduation, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he began working as a remedial math and reading teacher at the Fulton County Juvenile Detention Center. In addition, he did some menial jobs as a waiter while preparing for an entry-level news job at WXIA-TV, the local NBC affiliate. After working as a television reporter, writer, and producer in Atlanta, he landed a job at ABC News in 1980. He served as an assignment editor for the Washington, DC-based news bureau.
Later in 1982, he became an on-air correspondent for ABC. He has covered major events, including the war in Lebanon, the Vietnamese boat exodus in the mid-1980s, and Rajiv Gandhi’s election campaign following the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi. In 1986, he moved up to a regular role on ABC News magazine 20/20. In 1992, after working for twelve years with the network, he left to join NBC.However, he did work with NBC until his time stint for the ‘Dateline NBC’ show. She served on the show with his co-host, Jane Pauley. During his time at NBC, he had also hosted Weekend Magazine with Stone Phillips. Also, she conducted some of the notable interviews such as US Army Soldier Lynndie England, Serial Killer Jeffrey Dahmer and Russian President Boris Yeltsin. However, the network did not renew their additional $7 million contracts. so she worked with the network until July 2, 2007.
He has also been a guest on the premiere episode of ‘The Colbert Report’ hosted by Stephen Colbert, as well as ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’. In 2012, he contributed reporting to the PBS NewsHour. In 2013, he produced and hosted the show “Moving with Grace” on PBS stations. He has also reported on golf course water use for Golf Channel in the same year.

Phillips is happily married to his wife Debra Del Toro-Phillips. Debra, as a child, moved to New York City, but she is of Puerto Rican origin. She has a successful career as a fashion designer. After succeeding in her career, she returned to college where she earned a master’s degree in social work. Together, the couple welcomed their first child, Streeter Phillips, in 1988. Although after seven years they had a daughter in August 1995, she died the same day.
