Steven Spielberg made his first film when he was 12 years old. It was a train wreck, involving his toy at the time, Trains Lionel. He would continue to make amateur films throughout his teenage years until he became a Boy Scout in 1958 and won the Photographic Merit Badge after making an 8-minute, 9-minute film, which he titled The Last Gunfight
Years later, he would tell an interviewer about this experience. He said:
“My dad’s camera was broken, so I asked the scoutmaster if I could tell a story with my dad’s camera. He said yes, and I had the idea of making a western. did and got my merit badge. That’s how it all started.”
At the age of sixteen, in 1963, Steven Spielberg wrote and directed Firelight – a 140-minute sci-fi adventure – which became his very first independent film, and which would later inspire the film Close Encounters. The film’s budget was $500, most of which came from his father, and was shown at a local movie theater for one night, driving down its production cost that night.
