Stephen Tyrone Colbert is best known as the television host for the shows The Colbert Report which aired from 2005 to 2014 and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert which aired since 2015. In addition to being a TV presenter, he is also a comedian, writer and producer. As an actor, he has appeared on screen several times. Colbert is a huge fan of the fantasy and science fiction genres, particularly the works of JRR Tolkien, the critically acclaimed author The Lord of the Rings , and The Hobbit.
Stephen Colbert’s Age, Early Life and Career
Stephen Colbert was born the son of a great Catholic, the youngest of eleven children, Colbert grew up with his parents and siblings in James Island, South Carolina. He began his education at the Porter-Gaud School, by the time he got into high school he was a member of both the drama and press clubs. He enrolled at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia in 1982 and majored in philosophy. His interest in theatrical arts did not wane, and throughout his studies he continued to take part in theatrical plays. After two years in Hampden-Sydney, Stephen transferred to Northwestern University, where he majored in theatre. He graduated from the university’s School of Communication two years later.
After graduating in 1986, Colbert went to work at The Second City , Chicago’s most famous improv company, known for its impromptu theater company. He worked for the company on menial jobs before taking the company’s freelance acting courses at its training center. The company recognized his talent in comedy and hired him to perform with their touring group. Along the way, he forged a relationship with fellow actors Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello. The trio then created their own television series for HBO, a 30-minute series entitled Exit 57. It debuted on comedy channel Comedy Central and received rave reviews in addition to five nominations in 1995.
In 1997, after completing Exit 57, Colbert joined the cast of The Daily Show , a parody series. At the time, the show was hosted by Craig Kilborn, who was replaced in 1999 by the better known Jon Stewart. His years as part of the cast continued on The Daily Show , earning Colbert widespread popularity, and by 2005 he was the host of his own television show, The Colbert Report . The show was an instant hit and was rated highly among other Comedy Central shows. It ran for 9 years and ended on December 18, 2014.
Stephen Colbert was offered a position as host of The Late Show prior to the completion of The Colbert Report . The late-night talk show was being hosted by David Letterman at the time, and Colbert was scheduled to take his place once Letterman retired. And so, on September 8, 2015, Colbert succeeded Letterman as the new host of the show, which aired on CBS.

Stephen Colbert is the last of eleven children born to James William Colbert Jr. and Lorna Elizabeth Tuck. Colbert Jr. was a physician, immunologist, and vice president of academic affairs at the Medical University of South Carolina. His wife Lorna was a stay at home mother. His father and his two older brothers Peter and Paul died in a plane crash when Stephen was ten years old. The boys died with their father on the way to enrollment in Connecticut. After the incident, his mother relocated the family to more urban Charleston, South Carolina. The Colbert children are James III, Edward, Mary, William, Margo, Thomas, Jay, Elizabeth, Paul, Peter and Stephen.
Stephen Colbert’s wife, Evelyn BrabhamMcGee-Colbert, is the daughter of a prominent civil prosecutor and was born on July 23, 1963 in Charleston, South Carolina. She is an actress and has made several television and screen appearances. Her acting roles included an appearance in one of the installations of the famous fantasy series The Hobbit.
She graduated from the University of VirginiaCollege of Arts and Science in 1985 in English and Arms Drama. The couple met when Stephen had accompanied his mother to see the premiere of a play. The two struck up a conversation after the show and soon after began a serious relationship.
