South East govs, monarchs to meet over peace project

The meeting of South East governors and monarchs to discuss the peace project is scheduled for Friday, December 29. Key figures expected to attend include the Governors of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, as well as traditional rulers, opinion leaders, and captains of industry from various political affiliations.

Mrs. Mary Ikoku, the Chair of the Media and Communication Committee for the project, emphasized that the unveiling of the ‘Peace in South East Project’ aligns with the homecoming reception for Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu. This event aims to acknowledge Kalu’s dedication to public service and his significant contributions to the South East and the nation.

Organized by the Peace in South East Project and the people of Bende Local Government Area of Abia, the event is a platform to recognize the Deputy Speaker’s achievements and unwavering commitment to the well-being and progress of the region’s people.

The project advocates for a non-kinetic strategy as an alternative to solely relying on military force to address security challenges in the South East. Ikoku urged the Nigerian military to adjust its operational approach by prioritizing engagement with the local community to foster mutual trust and cooperation.

Mr. Ogbonna Ukuku, Head of Programmes, highlighted the significance of the event in formalizing peace in the South East. He also mentioned the potential areas of intervention, encompassing agriculture, education, leadership, sports, culture, and tourism, among others.

The initiative’s focus on fostering peace through dialogue and non-military means demonstrates the commitment to finding sustainable solutions to the security issues in the South East.
