Renowned breast cancer researcher was bornP. V and Rajam Gopalan in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India in 1938. She had three siblings, a brother and two sisters. She enjoyed an entertaining childhood filled with rich Indian cultural music and arts. Shyamala started attending school at a very young age and graduated at the age of 19 with a BS degree from Delhi University. The noble civil rights activist later earned her master’s and doctorate in philosophy in endocrinology and nutrition at the age of 25 from the University of California at Berkeley.
Shyamala Gopalan actually started her research working at her alma mater in the Department of Zoological Cancer Research. After a while, she got a job at two different universities to work as a breast cancer researcher, including the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin.
Gopalan worked as a researcher for 16 years and during this time she made important discoveries from her research projects including proper understanding of the hormones related to breast cancer and this she completed through her various laboratory experiments. While at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Gopalan conducted experimental studies to determine the role of sex steroids in causing breast cancer.
