Shania Twain, the renowned singer, disclosed on Sunday, Dec. 4, that she used to flatten her breasts to protect herself from the sexual abuse inflicted by her stepfather, Jerry Twain.
The 57-year-old singer recounted how Jerry Twain subjected her to physical and emotional abuse during her time at the house, as reported by The Sunday Times.
She explained, “I hid myself and I would flatten my boobs. I would wear bras that were too small for me, and I’d wear two, playing it down until there was nothing girly about me. Making it easier to go unnoticed. Because, oh my gosh, it was terrible — you didn’t want to be a girl in my house.”
Twain, who ventured into her performance career at the age of eight, struggled to embrace her femininity due to the trauma of the abuse.
She first revealed the abuse in her 2011 autobiography “From this Moment.”
In the book, Twain describes instances where she had to physically intervene between her parents out of fear that her stepfather might harm her mother.
She wrote, “It took a long time to manage that anger. You don’t want to be somebody that attacks me on the street. Because I will f**king rip your head off if I get the chance.”
Twain’s parents passed away when she was 22.
