Police in Cameroon have initiated a probe into match-fixing allegations against Samuel Eto’o, the President of the country’s Football Federation.
Eto’o is accused of playing a significant role in securing promotion to the first division for Cameroonian football club Victoria United.
An audio recording leak suggests that the 42-year-old was part of a large group involved in fixing games in Cameroon’s second-tier league.
According to The Guardian, Cameroonian police have stated in a letter that they are currently interviewing several key witnesses affiliated with the match-fixing organization.
In the transcription of the recording published by the aforementioned newspaper, Eto’o is heard saying: “Don’t worry, we will give you your three points and we will suspend the referee. Opopo [Victoria United’s nickname] must go up to the first division. This is our goal. This is our federation. Victoria United will go up.”
Meanwhile, Eto’o has vehemently denied all allegations, stating that he was merely conversing with a friend who invests in football and aims to make his club one of the finest in Cameroon. He further clarified that he reassured his friend that he would do everything possible to prevent any refereeing mistakes in their favor.
