The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has received a warning from Russia about the planned military intervention in the ongoing political tension in Niger Republic.
Russia cautioned that such action could intensify the crisis.
On Thursday, the leaders of ECOWAS member states unanimously agreed to deploy a “ready force” in an effort to restore constitutional democracy in Niger and reinstate the deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.
President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, who is the chairperson of ECOWAS, clearly stated that “all options are being considered, including the utilization of force as a final measure”.
However, Russia argues that a military resolution could result in a “prolonged confrontation”.
“We are of the opinion that a military resolution to the crisis in Niger could lead to a long-lasting clash in that African nation and cause significant destabilization in the Sahara-Sahel region as a whole,” expressed the Russian foreign ministry.
Russia has not officially supported the leaders of the coup.
