Russia has been excluded from participating in the Euro 2024 qualifiers due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This decision was confirmed by UEFA, who banned the country from competing in the qualification matches for the tournament.
The ban comes as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, leading to UEFA and FIFA imposing sanctions on Russian national and club teams. The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld this ban in July and also prohibited Russia from bidding to host Euro 2028 or Euro 2032. As a consequence, Russia was also removed from the World Cup qualifiers for the upcoming tournament in Qatar.
In a statement, UEFA stated that “All Russian teams are currently suspended following the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee of 28 February 2022,” which was further confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 15 July 2022. As a result, Russia will not be included in the UEFA European Football Championship 2022-24 qualifying draw.
As a consequence of Russia’s exclusion, Germany has been confirmed as the host country for the Euro 2024, and the qualifying draw is scheduled to take place in Frankfurt on October 9. A total of 53 countries will compete for the remaining 23 spots in the finals, with the top-performing teams from the 2022-23 Nations League also having the opportunity to participate in playoff competitions for three additional spots.
UEFA announced that there would be seven groups consisting of five teams and three groups with six teams in the Euro 2024 qualifying stage.
