Parish attended Woodlawn High School, where he aided the team in winning the Class AAAA state championship in 1972. Despite his achievements, he faced challenges due to severe penalties from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for supposed academic unsuitability. His successful basketball stint at the Centenary College of Louisiana from 1972 to 1976, and leading the US national team to a gold medal in the 1975 Pan American Games, however, were overshadowed due to the NCAA penalties.

After college, Parish entered the 1976 NBA Draft and was selected in the first round by the Golden State Warriors. He also received a draft from the ABA but opted to join the Warriors. Subsequently, he was traded to the Celtics in 1980, where he played alongside Larry Bird, Cedric Maxwell, and Kevin McHale until 1994, winning three NBA titles. Notably, Parish, alongside his teammates, is considered one of the greatest front courts in NBA history. Following his time with the Celtics, he played with the Charlotte Hornets for two seasons and concluded his career with the Chicago Bulls at the age of 43, winning an NBA Championship in his final season, becoming the oldest player to achieve this feat.

During his career, Parish was a nine-time NBA All-Star and was later named among the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, with Bill Walton hailing him as the “greatest shooting big man of all time.” The Celtics retired his jersey number 00. After retiring as a player, Parish continued his involvement in basketball as a mentor within the Celtics organization.

Regarding his personal life, Parish was married to Nancy Saad, with whom he had a child. However, they divorced in 1990.
