Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois has announced his absence from Belgium’s Euro 2024 campaign following a knee injury sustained in August.
The 31-year-old goalkeeper left the training pitch in tears after an MRI scan confirmed an ACL tear.
A week later, he underwent surgery supervised by the Real Madrid medical team, ruling him out for the entire 2023-24 season.
Courtois has now confirmed that the injury will also prevent his participation in the upcoming Euros, delivering a major blow to the Belgian national team.
He informed Belgian outlet Sporza, ‘Due to the injury, there will be no European championships for me anyway.’
‘If I’m lucky, I can play another match in May. But then you can never be 100 percent ready for a big tournament,’ he added.
In Courtois’ absence, Belgian coach Domenico Tedesco has Koen Casteels, Thomas Kaminski, Matz Sels, and Arnaud Bodart as goalkeeping options.
