The Edo State Police Command is reeling from the shocking incident in which a police Inspector, Jonathan Okouromi, fatally shot Sergeant Abosele Akhere. The tragedy unfolded around 9pm on Sunday in Ikponwosa/Egban community, Egor Local Government Area of Edo.

PUNCH Metro reported that the operation was to apprehend suspected cultists who had been terrorizing the Ikponwosa/Egban community. During the operation, Sergeant Abosele Akhere successfully arrested a notorious cultist known as ‘Raggae’, the prime suspect in cult-related activities.

In a shocking turn of events, Inspector Jonathan Okouromi inexplicably shot Sergeant Akhere from behind, leading to his immediate death. Eyewitnesses recounted how Inspector Okouromi fled the scene as soon as he realized the gravity of his actions, leaving behind his firearm.

The arrested cultist, ‘Reggae’, also managed to escape, while another individual, Mr. Agbontaen Monday, a member of the Eiye confraternity, was taken into custody. The police are currently conducting a search for the fleeing Inspector Okouromi.

Meanwhile, the body of the slain police sergeant has been deposited at the mortuary, and further investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Police Public Relations Officer for Edo State, Chidi Nwabuzor, was unavailable for comment as he was on holiday at the time of the report.
