Oneohtrix Point Never, born Daniel Lopatin on July 25, 1982, in Massachusetts, had an early life influenced by his Russian-Jewish “refusenik” parents with musical backgrounds. Introduced to electronic music through his father’s collection and a Roland Juno-60 synthesizer, he ventured into synthesizer music during high school with collaborator Joel Ford.
After attending Hampshire College, Lopatin moved to Brooklyn for grad school at Pratt Institute, where he studied archival science and became involved in the local noise music scene. His musical journey began under various aliases and groups before adopting Oneohtrix Point Never.
His early works, including “Betrayed in the Octagon” and “Zones Without People,” gained recognition, leading to the 2009 compilation “Rifts.” Lopatin’s diverse musical upbringing, shaped by his parents and experiences, laid the foundation for his groundbreaking career in experimental electronic music.
