BIOGRAPHY
Matthew McConaughey was still only a law student at the University of Texas when a mutual friend introduced him to Richard Linklater , who decided to give him an extra in his film Rebel Generation in 1993. After filming, he conscientiously resumed his studies before taking on a few small roles, which above all allowed him to make his attractive physique known.
Will the general public really remember his name thanks to the film The Right to Kill? by Joel Schumacher in 1996. With this character of a fighting lawyer, the actor finds himself more and more at the head of the bill, with the biggest names in the profession. He was chosen by Steven Spielberg to play one of the main roles in Amistad alongside Anthony Hopkins , and played opposite Jodie Foster in Contact by Robert Zemeckis in 1997.
With his seductive physique, Matthew McConaughey often plays the type of modern hero, whether historical ( U-571 by Jonathan Mostow ), hero for a day ( Live on Ed TV by Ron Howard ) or romantic ( A Marriage Too Perfect with Jennifer Lopez ). In 2002, he starred in the thriller Emprise , Bill Paxton ‘s first notable feature film , and followed up with a new romantic comedy, How to Get Dumped in 10 Lessons , where he starred opposite Kate Hudson .
After playing a future father, brother of a “small man” (played by Gary Oldman ), who discovers that his child suffers from dwarfism in Tiptoes (2003), a dramatic comedy unpublished in France, he completely changes register . In Sahara (2005) he plays a modern-day adventurer, a sort of crazy Indiana Jones, in search of a treasure hidden in the African desert. He shares the bill with his accomplice, Steve Zahn , and Penélope Cruz with whom he lives a short romance. Having gained kilos of muscle for the needs of the film, DJ Caruso gives him the opportunity to make them profitable by giving him the role of an injured athlete who becomes involved with a bookmaker, Al Pacino , in Two for the Money (2006) .
But the call of adventure once again catches up with the actor, who finds Kate Hudson and takes her on a treasure hunt in the heart ofThe Love of Gold (2008) by Andy Tennant , before being part of McG ‘s first dramatic effort , entitled We Are Marshall . The actor then agreed to play a supporting role in Ben Stiller ‘s zany comedy Tropic Thunder (id.), then took another detour into romantic comedy alongside Jennifer Garner , this time in Haunted by His Exes (2009 ). After a short absence, we find him again in 2011 in The Lincoln Defense where he again plays a lawyer. From this film, the actor chose to direct his career towards more complex projects.
Thus, 2012 is an exceptional year for Matthew McConaughey, since he is starring in several memorable films: Magic Mike where he plays a stripper-businessman, Killer Joe in which his character as a mysterious hitman sends chills down the spine and finally Paperboy , where he breaks his handsome image by portraying a scarred and tortured homosexual. Three unforgettable performances. The following year, he carried Mud , which also took place in the humidity of the South of the United States, made a short but hilarious appearance in The Wolf of Wall Street by Martin Scorsese and then turned to television where, in the company of Woody Harrelson , he sets out in pursuit of a fearsome serial killer in True Detective . The series is a true masterpiece and the actor’s performance is stunning.
Building on these notable roles, Matthew begins 2014 with an ambitious project for which he lost 22 kilos: Dallas Buyers Club where he slips into the shoes of Ron Woodroof, a person diagnosed with HIV who decides to engage in a battle against the laboratories and federal authorities. That same year, he played the title character in Christopher Nolan ‘s Interstellar . After this period of great success, Matthew McConaughey continued with three films which did not meet with success despite the actor’s investment: Our Memories (2016), Free State of Jones (id.) and Gold (2017). Also in 2017, he was the Man in Black in The Dark Tower , an adaptation of a series of eight novels by Stephen King , which was a flop. We had to wait until 2020 and Guy Ritchie ‘s new gangster film The Gentlemen for the actor to return to critical and commercial success. He plays a drug trafficker as charismatic as he is intelligent, alongside a top-notch cast made up of, among others, Charlie Hunnam , Colin Farrell and Hugh Grant .
