The d3ath of a man who survived the 9/11 terrorist attack while trying to save a group of children from drowning has shocked and saddened many. The 43-year-old father of three, Luke Laidley, bravely jumped into Lake Michigan on July 4th to rescue children whose raft had capsized near Elder Beach.
Tragically, despite his heroic efforts, Laidley succumbed to drowning during the rescue attempt. He was on a boat when the incident occurred and wasted no time jumping into the water to help the struggling children.
After successfully getting the children to safety, Laidley himself needed assistance and was pulled back onto the boat. Despite CPR efforts and being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at Evanston Hospital.
Originally from Chicago, Laidley was described as a devoted family man and leaves behind his wife, Lauren, and their three young children. After surviving the 9/11 attack in New York City, where he was working at the World Trade Center, Laidley moved back to Chicago and eventually met his wife.
His family remembered him fondly, describing him as someone who exuded positivity and perseverance in everything he did. Indeed, his selfless act to save the children is a testament to a life lived with purpose and a true hero.
