Her two daughters, Lola Simone, born June 28, 2002 in New York City, and Zahra Savannah, born May 22, 2004, are products of her nearly two-decade marriage to Chris Rock, whom she met at the Essence Awards and at Tied November 23, 1996.

At age 24, Malaak was working for Manhattan’s top public relations executive, Terrie M. Williams, who decided to quit the job because she didn’t have time to volunteer. Her boss found it difficult to understand why she left, but Malaak told her it was because she believed service is the rent we pay for her to live and she wasn’t paying hers.
