Reports suggest that former Barcelona and Liverpool striker, Luis Suarez, might be considering retirement from football due to ongoing pain caused by his persistent injuries.

The Uruguayan striker, currently playing in Brazil for Serie A side Gremio, has been struggling with injury issues since leaving his boyhood club, Nacional, at the end of last year. In his 25 appearances in all competitions for the side, he has had to cope with these injury problems.

Having missed six games due to injury thus far, the club president has confirmed that Suarez is consistently in pain, raising concerns about a potential retirement. In a video shared on Twitter, the club president Alberto Guerra expressed, ‘Luis Suárez is reaching his limit. To be able to play, he is given almost daily injections and special treatments, as he feels constant pain. The situation is serious’.

Suarez has long been plagued by knee issues, for which he was sidelined for 149 days after undergoing surgery during his time at Barcelona. Despite these persistent injury problems, the 36-year-old has managed to score 11 goals and provide eight assists for the Brazilian side. He notably contributed to Gremio winning the Campeonato Gaúcho 2023 title after a 2-1 aggregate victory over Caxias RS, where Suarez also scored a goal.

Prior to joining Gremio, Suarez played for his boyhood club Nacional in the Uruguayan Primera División, during which time he scored eight goals in 16 games and helped the team secure a league title.

Suarez bid farewell to European football after departing from Atletico Madrid in 2022, following a two-year stint. Before that, he spent six years at Barcelona and four years at Liverpool, amassing a total of 280 goals in 416 games for the two clubs combined.
