Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri, known simply as Luis Miguel, is a Mexican singer and music producer, born on April 19, 1970, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Son of Luis Rey and Marcela Basteri, a Spanish singer and composer and an Italian actress, Luis Miguel came to Mexico since he was little, due to his father’s career, but later they would return to Luis Rey’s hometown, Madrid, Spain. That was where he grew up and attended school, until fifth grade, when he ventured into the entertainment industry. Upon discovering the notable qualities of his son, Luis Rey abandoned his own career to dedicate himself completely to the development of Luis Miguel.
With his father, he began touring various Mexican radio and television stations trying to get featured on the powerful company T elevisa . After appearing with the Bebu Silvetti orchestra at the wedding of the daughter of the Mexican president, José López Portillo, Luis Miguel held the first meetings with the EMI company, in search of signing a musical contract.
He finally released his first album, titled El Sol , at the end of 1982, to kick off a long and successful musical career . At the age of 17 he was hired by the famous Warner Music International label, and together with Juan Carlos Calderón, he recorded the album Soy Como Quiero Ser , winner of eight Gold and five Platinum albums. Seeking greater recognition and closeness with the public, the artist records his first music video with the song When Calienta el Sol , which consolidates him as the new great Spanish-speaking sex symbol.
For the presentation of his album 20 años , the artist was one of the most important in Latin America, conquering North American, European and Asian markets. With the album he toured Mexico, Latin America and the United States on a successful tour, including a legendary performance at Madison Square Garden. Since the beginning of the new millennium, Luis Miguel has performed, on different tours, at the National Auditorium of Mexico, becoming one of the artists with the most selling performances in history. To date, he has published 21 albums, always successful in sales and acceptance.
