After being killed by Kain, Raziel is resurrected by The Elder God to seek revenge as the "soul reaver." He gains the titular Soul Reaver sword during his quest.
Development started in 1997, but issues with Silicon Knights, who developed Blood Omen, led to legal problems. Some content originally planned for Soul Reaver had to be used in later games.
Despite delays, the game received positive reviews for its gothic story and impressive graphics. However, it was criticized for its simplistic and repetitive gameplay and lackluster ending. Despite that, the game managed to sell 1.5 million copies worldwide by 2001.

The player assumes the role of Raziel, a disfigured and ghostly vampire, in the game. In the material realm, he can manipulate blocks, doors, and switches. The game features various puzzles that rely on the differences between these realms, with platforms and environment features changing form to create new paths.
Combat in Soul Reaver is a hack-and-slash system, with different attacks followed by a finishing move. Raziel faces different types of enemies, including humans, spectral creatures, and vampires. Each group of vampire enemies possesses unique powers. Human and spectral enemies can be killed with claws or weapons, while vampires must first be stunned and then destroyed in specific ways.
As the game progresses, Raziel gains new abilities by defeating other vampires, such as the power to phase through gates in the spectral realm and climb walls in the material realm. He can also swim, use telekinetic energy to move objects and enemies and find magical glyphs that grant him various abilities. These glyphs are acquired through puzzle-solving at specific locations.
Throughout the game, Raziel can collect souls left by defeated enemies to replenish his health. In the physical realm, his health decreases over time, but he can stop this with the Soul Reaver sword. However, he loses the sword if he takes damage and can only regain it by restoring his health to full.
