Lab technician Ross McCullam has been found guilty of murdering his coworker, Megan Newborough, after inviting her to his home and subsequently strangling her and cutting her throat. McCullam admitted to manslaughter but denied murder, claiming he was acting out of “blind rage” due to sexual abuse triggered by his encounter with her.
The 30-year-old was convicted at Leicester Crown Court and will be sentenced on December 16. Prosecutors alleged that McCullam murdered Newborough shortly after her arrival at his home, and he attempted to cover his tracks by dumping her body, throwing away her phone, and sending text messages asking if she was okay.
McCullam denied murder and attributed his actions to diminished responsibility, citing undiagnosed PTSD inadvertently triggered by the victim. During the trial, he controversially admitted to watching pornography just hours after the murder, stating that it made him feel better. McCullam’s sentencing will take place at Leicester Crown Court on December 16.
