Anthony Keith “Tony” Gwynn, Sr. (May 9, 1960 – June 16, 2014) was widely known as Mr. Padre and was an American professional baseball right fielder. He had an illustrious career, playing 20 seasons (1982–2001) in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Diego Padres. Gwynn achieved great success throughout his career, winning an impressive eight batting titles, which is tied for the second-most in MLB history. He was considered one of the best and most consistent hitters in the history of baseball and was a 15-time All-Star. Additionally, he was recognized for both his offensive and defensive skills with seven Silver Slugger Awards and five Gold Glove Awards. In 2007, Gwynn was rightfully inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, in his first year of eligibility.

Gwynn attended San Diego State University (SDSU), where he not only excelled in college baseball but also played college basketball for the San Diego State Aztecs. His talent was acknowledged when he was selected by the Padres in the third round of the 1981 MLB Draft as the 58th overall pick. Gwynn participated in the World Series in 1984 and 1998, which are the only two World Series appearances in San Diego’s franchise history. Even more impressively, Gwynn maintained a remarkable .338 career batting average and never hit below .309 in any full season. He also boasted a batting average of .371 in World Series games. Gwynn’s skill as a contact hitter led him to accumulate 3,141 career hits, which placed him among the elite group of players who reached the 3,000 hit club while playing for only one team.

After retiring, the Padres honored him by retiring his jersey number 19 in 2004. Gwynn continued to contribute to baseball, serving as the head baseball coach at his alma mater, and he also worked as a baseball analyst. Tragically, Gwynn passed away on June 16, 2014, after battling salivary gland cancer.
