He started off his football journey at Louisiana State University (LSU) where he was a four-year starter and later went on to play for the Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans.

Mawae’s exceptional talent was recognized with six consecutive Pro Bowl selections (1999–2004) and eight All-Pro honors. He also made valuable contributions as the NFLPA president during the 2011 NFL lockout.
