Growing up, she spent most of her childhood in South Africa before settling temporarily in Canada at the age of 11, before returning at the age of 14. Before finally settling in Canada at the age of 17, she continued her high school education at West Vancouver Secondary School.
Upon graduating from high school in 1998, she intended to attend medical school and earn a college medical degree, but that all changed after her mother tricked her into auditioning for a short piece called Valley Song which was to be shown at the Vancouver Film Festival. She initially refused, but eventually gave it a shot and got the part.
After the festival, she received a call from a movie agent which eventually led to her big screen debut in the 1999 American TV movie, In a Class Apart. The following year, she was featured in the Fox family television series Higher Ground in which she played the role of an African-American child adopted by white parents before playing a recurring role on the popular television series , Da Vinci Survey. Her big break came in 2002 after she was cast as the character of Snell in the remake of the 1976 film Carrie. Thanks to her outstanding performance, she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
In 2004, while enjoying the success of her role in Carrie, she had a major role in the hit Sci-Fi Channel series Battlestar Galactica in which she played the role of Anastasia DeeDualla. She remained a regular on the show until its very last episode in 2009 with her Pea Body Achievement Award in 2005. That said, she went on to appear in several other hit TV series and movies such as Hemlock Grove, Broken Kingdom, Reaper, Smallville, Jake 2.0, and Be Yourself.
