His father, Ken Hakuta, a Japanese-American inventor and television personality known prominently as Dr. Fad, and his mother, a Filipina. His parents met while working at the World Bank in 1977. Justin has two other brothers, Kenzo Hakuta and Aki Hakuta. His brother Kenzo Hakuta is a director and actor.
