In 1984, Schnabel invested in a claim in Porcupine Creek, Alaska, which later became renowned as the Big Nugget Mine. This mine served as the location for the reality television series “Gold Rush” (2010–present) on Discovery Channel during its 2nd, 3rd, and 5th seasons. John appeared as a recurring guest star in the 1st to 6th seasons, significantly adding to his wealth and popularity. Multiple members of the Schnabel family also took part in the reality show. Despite suffering a heart attack during the 2nd season, John recuperated and returned to the show.

In 2011, he handed over the operation of the Big Nugget Mine to his 17-year-old grandson, Parker Schnabel. However, John continued to advise his grandson and resumed his role at the mine when Parker had to leave.
