Jaylon Smith’s bio
Jaylon Smith was born on June 14, 1995. At Bishop Luers High School, where he received his high school education, he played basketball, soccer and track skating. The kid showed more promise when football received the Butkus Award, which goes to the state’s top linebacker, and also received the Mr. Football award for the state of Indiana. Although his talent as a football player was evident, Jaylon stayed with basketball until he was a junior. At track events, he continued to compete in activities such as relay and shot put through his senior year. He placed fourth in the shot put at the 2013 IHSAA T&F Sectional.
On February 6, 2013, Jaylon Smith signed a letter of intent committing him to play football at the University of Notre Dame. He was considered the top outside linebacker in his class by both Rivals.com and Scouts.com, and he competed in the 2013 US Army All-American Bowl. He took over as linebacker from Ben Councell after Dany Spond retired. He then started all 13 games of the season, totaling 67 tackles, three demolished passes and one interception.
In 2014, Jaylon Smith was moved to the inside linebacker position and was soon recognized as the FBS Independent Co-Defensive Player of the Year as well as an Associated Press All-American undergraduate. He received the Butkus Award in his junior year, but suffered a knee injury in the first quarter of the game against Ohio State. Jaylon’s knee surgery was successful, after which he announced on January 11, 2016 that he would waive the rest of his eligibility and enter the 2016 NFL draft.

The Dallas Cowboys surprised a lot of people when they picked Jaylon Smith in the second round of draft picks as the 34th overall pick. They took a big gamble that he would be able to get back strong after his knee injury, which was actually operated on by the team’s doctor.
On May 20, 2016, Smith signed a four-year rookie deal worth $6.49 million with a $2.9 million signing bonus. However, he did not perform in his freshman year as he was still recovering from surgery. He made his debut in 2017 when he used a drop foot as a support. The soccer player started as a midfielder in the Dallas Cowboy’s game against the New York Giants, where he recorded a total of 7 tackles and one forced fumble in the game. In his second game against the Denver Broncos, he doubled the number of tackles he had in his first game.The Dallas Cowboys played Jaylon Smith quite a lot in the upcoming games and he faced temporary situations which caused him to struggle in some of the games. In the last 10 games, the Cowboys had to use him as a backup, and he finished the season with 81 tackles, which was actually one of the highest season totals by a freshman in franchise history. In 2018, Jaylon was finally able to retire the ankle foot orthosis (AFO) and play without the aid.

Jay’s older brother Rod Smith is also a football player with the Dallas Cowboys. He attended Harding High School and the school’s football team once clashed with Jaylon’s high school. Jaylon’s team won the game 14-8. Rod Smith mostly appears as Ezekiel Elliott’s backup in the Dallas Cowboys.
