The investigation of the murder of a staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Daniel Adefemi Okunade, at a supermarket in Nasarawa State has been taken over by the Inspector General of Police, (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has sparked speculation of an assassination.
Okunade, who worked in the Internal Audit Department of CBN, was fatally shot in the head by suspected assassins while returning from work. The tragic event took place at the Wisdom Supermarket, also known as Abdullahi Supermarket, in the Koroduma Community of Nasarawa State, near Abuja, where he had gone to purchase bread and other items for his family.
Following a request from the management of CBN, the Inspector General of Police has taken over the probe, as reported by the Nasarawa State Police. Additionally, the CBN is in the process of relocating the deceased’s remains from the Mararaba Medical Center to Asokoro General Hospital in Abuja for security reasons.
Crack detectives from the Force Headquarters in Abuja were promptly dispatched to the scene by the Inspector General of Police. They interrogated the supermarket manager and reviewed the CCTV footage to gather crucial information for identifying and apprehending the culprits. Three other individuals, who were also murdered alongside the CBN staff, remain unidentified.
The CBN raised concerns and suspicions about the killing, particularly because the victim’s Toyota Venza car parked outside the supermarket was left untouched by the assailants. The gunmen reportedly searched Okunade before fleeing the scene, leading to speculation that he was their specific target.
Apart from his role at CBN, Okunade was also the choirmaster at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Koroduma Community. The supermarket remains closed to prevent tampering with potential evidence.
The Commissioner of Police (CP) in Nasarawa State, Umar Shehu Nadada, and his deputy are working closely with operatives from Abuja to conduct a thorough investigation into the crime. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Nasarawa State Police Command, DSP Ranham Nansel, confirmed the tragic incident to the media.
The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement authorities seek to apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.
