Footballer Anwar El Ghazi is suspended by Mainz over pro-Palestine social media post

Anwar El Ghazi, a footballer who plays for Mainz, has been suspended by the Bundesliga club. This action comes after he made a social media post about the conflict between Israel and Gaza. The Dutch winger has been barred from participating in training and games as a result of the club deeming his position on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as unacceptable. Part of El Ghazi’s post, which has since been removed from his Instagram story, stated, “Palestine will be free.” In a statement, the club explained that they had engaged in a thorough discussion with the player before making the decision to suspend him. The club also mentioned that they acknowledge the varying perspectives on the longstanding and complex Middle East conflict but distanced themselves from the content of El Ghazi’s social media post, which they believe does not align with the club’s values. El Ghazi, who has represented the Netherlands at the senior international level, joined Mainz in September after stints with Ajax, Lille, Villa, Everton, and PSV. He made the move to Mainz after being linked with a transfer to Manchester United.
