Unveiling Stray Gods
Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical offers a mesmerizing blend of roleplaying and musical elements, creating an unparalleled gaming experience. Developed by Summerfall Studios and published by Humble Games, this game has captured attention for its innovative approach and artistic brilliance.
Set in a mystical world where gods have lost their powers and turned into “strays,” players embark on a quest to restore these deities to their former glory. Available on various platforms such as Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, the game ensures a diverse audience can immerse themselves in its wonders.
Embracing The Theatrical Soul of Stray Gods
April witnessed a significant event at the iconic El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, where Summerfall Studios unveiled their debut game, “Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical.” The protagonist, Grace, portrayed by Laura Bailey, graced the stage to the captivating tunes of Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory’s piano melodies.
Joining her were cast members including Mary Kate Elizabeth McGlynn as Persephone and Ashley Johnson as Calliope. The presentation offered a glimpse into the game’s decision-making aspects, teasing players with choices they will encounter upon the game’s impending launch.
This bold presentation stood as a daring move for an indie game studio’s first release. David Gaider, the founder of Summerfall and former lead writer for Dragon Age, initially voiced skepticism post the event. However, this unconventional approach pays homage to the musical theater essence at the core of “Stray Gods,” showcasing the studio’s dedication to theater aficionados.
In an interview with TheGamer, Gaider and Wintory radiated enthusiasm for musical theater. Alongside influences like West Side Story, Into The Woods, Hamilton, Rent, and Book of Mormon, Gaider hinted at a Disney-inspired musical within the game, while Wintory aimed to match the storytelling and lyrical finesse of legends like Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. This ambitious goal of emulating the caliber of these masters highlighted the unprecedented venture of crafting the first-ever musical RPG.
From the outset, Summerfall Studios recognized the importance of harmonizing the creative processes of musical production with game development. This led to a deeply collaborative approach involving Summerfall, Wintory, the Australian band Tripod, singer Montaigne, and the voice actors. Such extensive cooperation, especially in a game with multiple songs, each offering over 40 minutes of replay value based on player choices, was a rarity.
A unique aspect of this collaboration was how the actors’ involvement extended to their song productions. During recording sessions, Wintory deliberately provided minimal accompaniment, often just a piano or guitar track, allowing the actors to shine. This layering of additional instrumentation later mirrored how Broadway composers adjust elements during a production to highlight the cast’s strengths and individuality.
Furthermore, Stray Gods faced the challenge of melding two distinct approaches when designing its branching choice system. Crafting choices that seamlessly intertwined with the coherence of each song in terms of sound, narrative, and lyrics posed hurdles traditional dialogue decisions couldn’t address.
Stray Gods: A Journey in Creation
Stray Gods marks the debut project of Summerfall Studios, based in Melbourne, Australia. Crafted by David Gaider, renowned for his work on BioWare’s Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the game’s narrative promises depth. The musical score, orchestrated by Austin Wintory, known for his work on titles like Journey and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, enriches the gaming experience.
The game boasts captivating 2D hand-illustrated visuals with a comic book-inspired aesthetic, featuring stylized character designs.
Originally known as “Chorus: An Adventure Musical,” the game received successful crowdfunding on Fig.co in 2019 after an announcement by Gaider at PAX AUS. The transition to Stray Gods was unveiled on March 18, 2022, in collaboration with Humble Games.
Channeling inspiration from the musical episode “Once More, With Feeling” from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the creators aimed to fuse musical theater essence with interactive storytelling in a gaming format.
The game offers diverging narrative paths, where player decisions not only influence the story but also impact the tunes, lyrics, and music styles sung by Grace, the protagonist.
Austin Wintory emphasizes the vast potential for diverse song combinations in Stray Gods, ensuring each playthrough is unique. In June 2023, Summerfall and Humble Games announced the game’s availability on major consoles alongside its Steam release in August.
The “Myth & Music Live Event” held on April 12, 2023, served as a significant showcase for Stray Gods. This event, organized by Summerfall Studios and Humble Games at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles and hosted by Troy Baker, featured live performances by Laura Bailey, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, and Ashley Johnson.
The event also included engaging Q&A sessions unveiling the involvement of Felicia Day, Rahul Kohli, Anjali Bhimani, and Janina Gavankar in the project’s cast.
