BIOGRAPHY
Eric Stoltz was born in 1961 to a mother who was a teacher and musician and a father who was a school teacher. After high school, young Eric continued his studies at the University of Southern California before flying to Scotland to join a theater company and satisfy his passion for comedy.
Back in the USA, Eric returned to the University of Southern California to study Drama. He began his career as an actor at the end of the 1970s, appearing in series and television films. It was in 1982 that the actor obtained his first film role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High by Amy Heckerling , written by Cameron Crowe . Eric became friends with the famous filmmaker and was part of the director’s next four feature films: The Wild Life in 84, Un Monde pour nous in 89, Singles in 92 and Jerry Maguire in 96.
Stoltz’s career nearly took a turning point in 1985 when Robert Zemeckis cast him as Marty McFly in Back to the Future . The actor is only the filmmaker’s second choice; in fact, Michael J. Fox not having been able to free himself for filming, the team had to fall back on Eric. After five weeks of filming, the young actor was nevertheless left from the Back to the Future adventure and Michael J. Fox was reinstated after having found an arrangement. Stoltz delivered an excellent performance but played a “too serious” Marty according to the director.
The artist consoled himself by bouncing back with the first role of Mask the same year. He plays Rocky Dennis, a teenager born with a facial deformity. The actor delivers a moving performance and earns a nomination for the Golden Globe for best actor. Between the late 1980s and mid-1990s, Stoltz’s career remained stable and never really took off. He appears in particular in La Mouche 2 , Memphis Belle or Killing Zoé alongside Frenchies Jean-Hugues Anglade and Julie Delpy .
In 1994, Stoltz landed a cult role in Quentin Tarantino ‘s Pulp Fiction . He plays Lance, the drug dealer who helps John Travolta save Uma Thurman from a fatal heroin overdose. The actor subsequently continued to play supporting roles in numerous productions of all kinds such as Anaconda , Keys to Tulsa or Chez lesheureux du monde . In the 2000s, Eric moved away from the big screen and joined the small window. He notably officiates in New York Special Unit , Out of Order , Will & Grace , Medium , Grey’s Anatomy and Caprica .
The actor still appears regularly in the cinema; in 2004, he was noticed as a pedophile father in The Butterfly Effect alongside Ashton Kutcher . He also toured under the direction of Gus Van Sant in Harvey Milk in 2008. The actor nevertheless gradually moved away from the profession to devote himself to directing. He is notably behind the camera of many episodes of popular TV series such as Boston Justice , Nip/Tuck , Private Practice , Grey’s Anatomy , Californication , Glee or recently Murder .
