EPL: Robbie Savage Criticizes Howard Webb Following VAR Mistake in Man United’s Game Against Wolves

Robbie Savage, the former Manchester United midfielder, has strongly criticized Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer of PMGOL, after a controversial incident in the Premier League opener between Man United and Wolves on Monday.

During the match at Old Trafford, Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana rushed out to claim a cross but missed the ball and collided with two Wolves attackers.

However, the referee Simon Hooper did not consider it a foul, and VAR officials Michael Salisbury and Richard West did not intervene.

As a result of the error, all three officials were dropped from the next round of Premier League fixtures, and Wolves received an apology after the game.

Nevertheless, Savage believes that Webb should be held accountable and has criticized PMGOL’s apology to Wolves.

“Instead of constantly apologizing, referees and VAR officials need to start getting it right,” Savage expressed to Metro.

“I have respect for Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer of PMGOL. He is trying to communicate, be transparent, and explain the new rules regarding timekeeping and conduct in the technical area.

“However, last season we witnessed too many apologies for his officials’ mistakes, and unfortunately, we have started the 2023-24 campaign in a similar disappointing manner. At some point, Webb needs to be held accountable,” Savage continued.

“Webb’s apology to Wolves for not awarding them a penalty doesn’t change anything,” he added.
