Sebastian Kehl, the sporting director of Borussia Dortmund, has revealed why the club was unable to sign Victor Boniface during the summer transfer window.
Although Dortmund had been linked with Boniface, it was Bayer Leverkusen who secured his services, and Kehl explains that this was due to the uncertainty surrounding the sale of Jude Bellingham.
Since joining Leverkusen, Boniface has been in fine form, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in just seven matches.
Kehl, however, maintains that he harbors no regrets about missing out on the Nigerian striker.
According to Kehl, “I’m not upset at all because I know that timing and circumstances are incredibly important in my job to be able to make the right decision at the right moment.” He adds, “At the time when such transfers were being negotiated and executed, we didn’t know that Jude Bellingham would be sold. There was no budget, therefore. Moreover, at that time, it wasn’t necessarily the plan to add another striker to the squad. Regardless of the Boniface situation, I find it interesting how players we had on our radar developed at other clubs. By the way, there are also many examples where I’m glad they are not under contract with Borussia Dortmund,” Kehl revealed to Funke Sports.
