Demand accounting for latest revenue idea | News, Sports, Jobs

Get ready to pay for something that you have had for hundreds of years on Maui. The beach! Another revenue idea from the county, like parking meters and paid parking. Visitors and residents pay dearly to be here for one simple pleasure: “going to Maui’s beaches.” It’s Maui’s biggest drawing card and tourist attraction. It generates billions of tax dollars for Maui County. Our Maui taxes and fees are already excessive. To add one more? And for what?

If the county is going to be allowed to charge “to go to the beach” then we deserve and must demand an exact accounting and itemization of what we get! An exact budget that spells out the exact improvements such as paving parking lots, restrooms, more lifeguards and maintenance at all of the busy beaches, daily beach cleanup and conveniently placed garbage receptacles, beach security so we don’t have our cars broken into and our folks threatened with bodily harm, improved access and a general improvement of our finest treasure.

The county does little enough to improve and safeguard our finest treasure and drawing amenity — “the beaches.” Yet, it’s the county’s greatest reason why folks come here and pay their tax dollars.

For instance, if the county is going to charge at Hookipa, then the parks department must tell us exactly what we will get exactly as to each and every “improvement” and when.

Folks, this is nonsense and simply another revenue collecting scheme. Stand up for your rights.
