Growing up, Hicks and her family moved from New York to Scottsdale, Arizona. It was there that she received her high school education at Gerard Catholic High School in Phoenix, Arizona, where she was a cheerleader and a member of the National Honor Society. After graduating in 1969, she enrolled at Saint Mary’s College (Indiana) to study English, literature, and theology. She then won a prestigious acting scholarship to Cornell University, where she was a member of the Ithaca Repertory Theater Company before earning her MFA degree.
